Drop Saw Buying Guide: What to Check
A drop saw, also called a mitre saw, makes quick and accurate crosscuts and angled cuts. Before you grab a deal, here are a few things worth checking so you get one that suits your jobs.
- Blade size and cutting capacityCheck the blade diameter and the maximum cut depth and width. Make sure it handles the timber sizes you cut most often.
- Sliding or non-sliding?A sliding arm lets you cut wider boards. Non-sliding saws are usually lighter and cheaper but limited in width. Pick based on your work.
- Mitre and bevel anglesLook at how far the saw tilts and swivels, and whether it bevels one way or both. Handy for trim, frames and roofing.
- Corded or cordlessCorded saws keep running without batteries. Cordless gives freedom on site, but check the battery fits your existing tools and the runtime suits you.
- Guards, dust and safety featuresCheck the blade guard moves freely and there's a dust port or bag. Always wear eye and hearing protection, and follow the manual.
- Weight, stand and extrasYou'll be lifting it, so check the weight. See if a stand, clamp or laser guide is included, and whether the blade is decent.
