How to Choose a Drill

Picking a drill can feel confusing with so many options on the shelf. Work out what jobs you'll do most, then check a few key things. This guide keeps it simple.

  1. Corded or cordless?Cordless is handy for moving around and working away from power. Corded usually suits long, heavy jobs in one spot without worrying about batteries.
  2. Drill or hammer drill?A standard drill suits timber, metal and general fixing. If you'll drill into brick or concrete, look for a hammer function.
  3. Check the chuck typeThe chuck holds the bit. Keyless chucks are quicker to change by hand. Make sure it fits the bit sizes you plan to use.
  4. Look at battery and chargerFor cordless, check the battery size and charge time. Consider buying into a battery system you can share across other tools.
  5. Variable speed and clutchVariable speed and an adjustable clutch give you control. They help stop screws going in too deep or stripping the head.
  6. Hold it before you buyCheck weight and balance in your hand if you can. A drill that feels awkward gets tiring fast. Always wear safety glasses and read the manual.
